Schutz's theory of sociology

Lester Embree

pp. 41-48

Within sociology the approach of methodological individualism in social psychology can be distinguished from methodological collectivism. It begins with the individual self and proceeds to relate to collective as well as individual others. This approach is evident in Schutz's accounts of an individual outsider approaching a new group and a former insider returning to a group she has been absent from. And it is with respect to such concrete situations that it can be seen that practical recommendations as well as theoretical insights can be offered.
