Theoretical underpinnings of the material culture of multilingualism

Larissa Aronin

pp. 21-45

The material culture of multilingualism is an emerging domain of research in multilingualism studies. The aims of this chapter are to present the material culture of multilingualism as a field in its own right, and consolidate the theoretical underpinnings of the material culture of multilingualism singled out so far. In particular, the author traces the development of scientific interest in signs, signs-in-places and in the physical environment, discusses philosophical traditions of dealing with materialities, including externalism and the concept of the extended mind and lists four types of language-defined objects.
