(2018) Schelling's reception in nineteenth-century British literature, Basingstoke, Palgrave Macmillan.
This chapter focuses on Schelling's reception within British Romanticism, looking at the ways in which Schelling's name first became known in Britain during the period. It begins with a survey of the early responses to Schelling in British periodicals, including early reviews of his works and focusing on the Monthly Magazine's regular reviews of German literature. The chapter then looks at Henry Crabb Robinson's period in Jena studying with Schelling, and his influence on Germain de Staël, whose De l"Allemagne was a key text in promoting Schelling's aesthetics in Britain. The chapter concludes with an initial evaluation of Coleridge's response to Schelling, examining his marginalia and focusing in particular on the period when Coleridge was most favourable in his response to Schelling's philosophy.
