Adraan Theodoor Peperzak, a Dutch citizen, was born on 3 July, 1929 in Malang (Java, Indonesia). From 1935 until 1941 he attended primary schools in Hilversum; from 1941 until 1947 he attended the City High School (Stedelijk Gymnasium) there. From 1948 to 1950 he studied philosophy under Dr. C. Schoonbrood, Dr. A. Epping and Dr. A. Schuwer and, from 1950 to 1955, theology in a Franciscan School. In 1955 he continued his philosophical studies in Louvain, Belgium, where he obtained his licentiate degree in 1957 from the Institute of Philosophy with a thesis on G. W. F. Hegel's work, Differenz des Fichte'schen and Schelling'schen Systems der Philosophie (1801). From 1957 to 1959, after receiving French recognition of his licentiate from Louvain, he continued his studies at the Faculté des sciences humaines of the University of Paris (Sorbonne). In January 1960 he received a doctoral degree from that university on the basis of his dissertation, Le jeune Hegel et la vision morale du monde (Director, Paul Ricoeur; other readers, J. Wahl and J. Hyppolite). This work was published in the autumn of 1960 by Nijhoff, The Hague.
