Heidegger on time and being

Joseph Kockelmans

pp. 55-76

On January 31, 1962, Heidegger gave a lecture at the University of Freiburg in a Studium Generale directed by Eugen Fink. The title of the lecture, Zeit und Sein,1 is a reference to the third section of the first part of Being and Time, which was originally announced under that title in 1927, but not published at the time. The first part of Being and Time was devoted to an interpretation of ">Dasein in terms of temporality, and to an explanation of time as the transcendental horizon for the question concerning the meaning of Being.2 In 1927, however, Heidegger felt he was not able to deal adequately with the theme indicated by the title of the third section of Part I of the book and decided therefore to publish his work in incomplete form.
