Interculturality, cosmopolitanism, and the role of the imagination

a perspective for communicating as globalcitizens

Nilanjana Bardhan , Miriam Sobré-Denton

pp. 131-160

Interculturality, as an interdisciplinary concept, holds much epistemic value in a world where intercultural spaces, identities, and projects are proliferating at a dizzying pace. Through the aid of this concept, we can develop interdisciplinary lenses for better understanding cultural interconnectedness and transformation within global flux. Globality is the inevitable condition of our times, and we need to think carefully about what kind of a world we want for the future and chart out ways to steer its processes in directions that will do more good than harm.1 The concept of interculturality holds promise for this endeavor. As intercultural communication scholars, in this chapter we offer some views from within our field, and hope they will be useful to scholars in other disciplines as well.
