"I"m working on a play inspired by your book, Hammer and Hoe, and before I proceed I wanted to make sure it was all right with you." It was Naomi Wallace on the other end of the line. The trepidation in her voice was palpable, though it paled in comparison with the combination of sheer terror and excitement that came over me as she spoke. She had read my book about the Communist Party in Alabama during the 1930s and apparently liked it enough to set her next play in that milieu.
