On several occasions, Mario Vargas Llosa has written and spoken about his admiration for the culture, language, and philosophy of France, with which he had become well acquainted during his youth in Lima and early adulthood in Paris when he decided to become a professional writer. French literature and its great writers and thinkers have been at the core of his preoccupations as a dissident intellectual.
