The aesthetic object as "die Sache selbst"

Mikel Dufrenne

pp. 45-53

I have always thought that aesthetics was a privileged path for philosophy — at least for a philosophy that goes "toward the concrete," as Jean Wahl said, and cares more for describing than for systematizing. Such a philosophy starts from examining the first relation of the being in the world with the world, i.e., perception; but this phenomenology of perception does not prevent going further, up to metaphysics or ontology. I would like to show that the phenomenology of the aesthetic object can achieve this step.
