A theoretical issue that has always been central to research in artificial intelligence is the concept of representation. For the sake of simplicity, one may say that analysis of the matter has moved in two main directions: the symbolic direction summed up by research in knowledge representation, and the sub-symbolic direction of connectionist analysis.
