The challenge of a perceptual gap between body and mind

Einav Katan

pp. 93-103

Katan advances the comprehension of supportive instructions in the practice of Gaga as an attitude and an approach towards the research of movement. The chapter suggests seeing the implicit motivation behind the mental guidance in Gaga as overcoming perceptual challenges. The chapter explores the issue of having a "body image," while analyzing its hindering physical effects on the subpersonal organizations of movement within the body schema. Katan extends the analysis, exploring the physical implications of holding a mental image concerning the ideal movement. The chapter propounds a psychological comprehension of physical tension, analyzing the case of leading two contradicting images as a mental effort that excludes physical knowledge.
