Identity and psychiatric disorders

Farhana Omer , Matthew Broome

pp. 41-59

In this chapter, Broome and Omer examine identity from several perspectives within psychiatry. They consider the identity of the discipline of psychiatry, the identity of the psychiatrist, the personal identity of the patient, and specifically the relationship between personal identity and a number of psychiatric disorders. Mental illness can lead to marked psychological changes in how individuals view both themselves and the society to which they belong.
