The introductory part contains an analysis of the historical conditions of the rise of Sociology at the Faculty of Philosophy in Prague associated with the name of T. G. Masaryk, the first Czech sociologist. The following section is an account of the development of Sociology in Prague and Brno in the years 1919 to 1939, and of the subsequent liquidation of Sociology in connection with the closing down of universities and colleges by the Nazi occupiers. The next part gives an analysis of the development of Sociology after 1945 interrupted for fifteen years after February 1948. The restitution of Sociology in the mid-sixties forms the content of further investigation. This is followed by an account of the period of state and Party control of Sociology following the invasion of Soviet troops in August 1968. An analysis of the liberation and development of Sociology after the Revolution in November 1989 is given in the final section of the paper.
