Der amerikanische Soziologe Jack Katz veröffentlicht 1999 ein Buch mit dem programmatischen Titel How Emotions Work, in dem vier qualitative ethnographische Studien zusammengefasst sind: Wut beim Autofahren, Momente der Scham, das Lachen in Spiegelkabinetten (fun houses), das Weinen eines Kleinkindes im Kindergarten sowie eines Kriminellen beim Verhör.
