(2018) Creative writing for critical thinking, Basingstoke, Palgrave Macmillan.

Introduction

Hélène Edberg

pp. 1-16

Can creative writing serve as a method for critical thinking? A lack of critical thinking skills in university students has given rise to concern among university lecturers in many countries. This book is based on research addressing narrative imagination and emotion as resources for learning critical thinking through creative writing. It explores how, in a pluralistic university, a sociocritical approach to creative writing and a social view on learning through writing may enhance metacritical text awareness. This is the definition of critical thinking used. The book is based on two studies in which the method was tested. The results give rise to ideas about pedagogical approaches to critical thinking, to creative writing, and to approaches of text analysis for tracing signs of learning in students' texts.
