Pragmatic implication

Werner Kummer

pp. 96-112

In "Pragmatics' Robert Stalnaker1 gives a short explanation of the notion "pragmatic presupposition" as a "propositional attitude... People, rather than sentences or propositions are said to have, or make, presuppositions in this sense... To presuppose a proposition in the pragmatic sense is to take its truth for granted, and to assume that others involved in the context do the same". In the following notes an attempt will be made to give a more elaborated account of pragmatic presupposition in terms of the notion "pragmatic implication".
