Running as a way of life

Tapio Koski

pp. 53-59

Lifestyle is an entity of connections in which the runner's experiences get set in the entity. Lifestyle verifies it and provides it its final meaning. What is essential is how the experiences and their meanings are absorbed to the "practical wisdom". Life connection, life entity is the sphere of an individual which is the sphere of the being of an individual. For this study the essential concepts are a runner and running, which through phenomenological argumentation raise the question: what does running mean? In a phenomenological study the subject is the givenness of a being (in this study: way of being in the sense how a runner is realized as a runner, what running is like in practice), not the being as such. The concept way of life is elaborated with the help of Zen philosophy and budo (a Japanese martial art that is based on Zen) in which the way of life becomes the way of no-way, the artless art.
