Teacher professional development and the case method

pp. 23-43

The core of teacher professional development is somehow always related to teacher change. Teacher change can be expressed as teacher learning, teacher professional growth, teachers transforming their knowledge into practice, or teacher implementation of something new or different. Teacher change as "growth' has reconceptualized teacher professional development as learning that is embedded in teachers' work. This has led to support for approaches employing cases situated in realistic contexts. The Case Method (CM) or case-based instruction is a teaching method using teaching cases. The extant literature on the use of the CM in teacher education beckons research on how learning takes place in the CM approach. The Not-so-simple Simple Electric Circuit is a dilemma (and decision) teaching case that was used in a science teacher professional development activity delivered using the CM approach. The case leading strategy used discussion and role play to simulate the challenges of teaching a science concept in a real-life classroom context.
